Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 — How to Defeat Golgra and What Rewards You Get

In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, there are plenty of powerful bosses who, in most cases, can kill you with a single blow and have a gigantic health pool. Because of this, many players simply skip these “mighty” opponents and focus only on the main storyline. One such boss is the Jestral chief named Golgra, whom the main character can challenge to a duel. In this guide, we’ll tell you how to defeat this warrior and what reward you can get.

Defeating Golgra in a Legal (Fair) Way

Golgra is a very powerful character whom you’ll encounter during the main story campaign. Before you can challenge her to a duel, you must complete the tournament quest and fight three opponents in the arena. After that, you can return to the chief and offer to participate in a friendly match. Be warned: only one character from your party can participate in the battle, and any “buff-stacking” builds will be useless.

The boss’s health points exceed a million, so “chipping away” at her will take not just a long time, but an excruciatingly long time. Personally, we spent more than an hour and a half fighting Golgra and ended up with a blister on our finger from endlessly spamming the dodge key.

If you have excellent reflexes and can parry any attack without much trouble, you can fight the boss right after completing the tournament quest. Otherwise, you should only challenge her from level 50 and above. The funniest thing is that Golgra can kill any hero with a single hit without any problem. Moreover, during the duel she will get extra turns, and by the very end you won’t even see your character in the left column of the turn-based system. Also note that Golgra has no vulnerabilities or resistances.

Still sure you want to fight this “cheater” boss? If so, let’s get started! First of all, equip the following lumins to your main build:

  • Painted Power — the most important perk, which will cut the battle duration several times over. It allows you to exceed the 9,999 damage limit and “take out” bosses in just a few minutes.
  • Solo Fighter — lets you deal 50% more damage if your hero fights alone. Also a very important perk for the duel with Golgra.
  • Cheater — allows you to act twice per round.
  • Last Stand — gives a 100% chance of a critical hit when fighting alone.
We recommend taking Maelle to the duel, as she is best suited for solo battles and deals a lot of damage through the simplest gameplay loop. Thanks to the “Cheater” lumin, she can choose the “Virtuoso” stance and immediately start hitting Golgra on the head. In addition, her abilities become extremely deadly thanks to Last Stand and Solo Fighter, which can deal over 200,000 damage from just a single counterattack.

Golgra’s First Phase

After all preparations, head to the village chief and challenge her to a duel. If you can’t perfectly parry all incoming attacks, at least try to survive a few rounds to memorize all the combinations and timings. You’ll have to do this anyway, as without perfect parrying, the fight can drag on for a very long time, and dodges won’t allow you to perform counterattacks.

First Combo: “Dance Around”

This is Golgra’s simplest combo, which can be parried easily. Don’t try to dodge, as you’ll lose the chance to land a counterattack. The main thing is to watch the screen. When it turns black and white, you need to block her kick. After the somersault, Golgra will slow down in the air, and you should press the button exactly when the boss starts to fall onto the hero. After this, you’ll deal counter damage.

Second Combo: “Impressive Combo”

This is a more difficult combo, as the period between attacks is very uneven. At the start, Golgra will leap toward the player. After that, she will soar into the air to deliver the first strike. The main thing is not to rush to block the attack immediately, as time will slow down a bit to throw you off. After a successful counterattack, be ready to block the next hit right away. It will also have a slight delay and time slow. But the third hit will be instant, so you need to press the button right after the second. Before the fourth attack, Golgra will do a quick pirouette, so don’t hurry. In general, your button presses should follow this timing: and one, and two, three, and four.

Tip: Turn off the music in the game settings and carefully listen for the sound cues that play exactly when Golgra’s strike reaches the perfect parry zone.

Third Combo: “Quick Combo”

A rather difficult combo due to the very sharp final attacks and the tiny window between strikes. Before the attack, Golgra will approach the player with the same lunge as in the “Dance Around” combo. After that, she’ll perform a pirouette similar to the finale of the “Impressive Combo,” but with a shorter animation segment and no time slowdown. This means you need to press the parry button when the boss jumps and takes a horizontal position in the air—after that, you won’t have time to block the attack. After the first attack, Golgra will spend about a second preparing for a somersault via a tilt. As soon as she crouches, press the dodge button. Parrying this attack is very difficult due to the tiny timing window. Immediately after dodging, quickly press the parry button. After the second attack, the boss won’t land on the ground but will strike downward from the air for a third hit. This is your perfect chance to counterattack.

All three combos will alternate with each other. The main difficulty is that the third and first combos look very similar at the start, and it’s almost impossible to prepare for the attack in advance. Try to pay attention to the label under the boss’s health bar. The name of the combo is shown there, which will greatly help your defense.

Golgra’s Second Phase

As soon as Golgra’s health drops below 50%, she will go into a rage and apply additional buffs to herself: Rush and Powerful. She’ll start performing new combos that are even faster and stronger. Surviving them is nearly impossible, and pulling off a perfect parry is only possible after dozens of attempts. Try to dodge and memorize the timings. It’s also worth noting that the boss will get many turns per round, which will greatly impact your overall concentration level. We advise you not to rush your first fight and not to be greedy—try to dodge more often than parry.

Fourth Combo: “Earthshaker”

The simplest combo of the second phase. At the start, you’ll see a yellow symbol indicating area damage. Before jumping, Golgra will pause in the air for a second, then instantly crash down to the ground. You need to jump exactly when the boss starts levitating. After that, press the counterattack button while airborne. But don’t relax! Immediately after the counterattack, Golgra will do a backflip. Time will stop for a second and the screen will turn black. The main thing is—don’t rush to press the counterattack button. Pay attention to the boss’s legs. As soon as they are higher than the rest of her body, perform the parry, as the downward strike will be lightning fast.

Fifth Combo: “Long Combo”

If you’ve somehow survived up to this point, get ready for even greater challenges. This combo is a mix of the phase one combos, but with slightly altered timings. First, Golgra will leap toward the player. After that, she’ll perform a sharp spinning strike. This is a pretty tough moment to parry, as the timing is very uneven. The preparation for the attack will be very fast, but the strike itself will come with a tiny delay. This is the moment when you need to press the counterattack button. Immediately after, press the parry button again, as Golgra will deliver another instant strike without landing on the ground. After that, she’ll drop down to perform another spinning strike. As soon as her legs are on the left side of the screen, you must press the parry button. Next, she’ll do a backflip. You need to block the strike exactly when the boss’s legs are in the air—not earlier or later. And that’s not all. Golgra will turn her back to you to strike with her leg. You need to parry the blow when the boss fully bends in front of you and starts to lift her leg.

This is a very difficult combo in terms of timing. You can dodge most of the attacks, but you must parry the last one. The difficulty is that the first strikes come at a very steady pace, but the last is almost instant.

Sixth Combo: “Fast Furious Combo”

Despite the threatening name, the combo is actually quite simple and quick. It starts with Golgra’s traditional approach toward the player. After that, the chief crouches and makes a sharp spinning lunge. As soon as the burning leg is on the left side of the screen, press the parry button. Right after the strike, the boss will crouch again to make an upward lunge. Time will slow down a bit, and as soon as it returns to normal, you must parry the attack again. After this, Golgra will briefly hang in the air to deliver a strike from above. After parrying the strike, wait for the boss to finish her pirouette and for one leg to be vertical. Then press the parry button. The count should go like this: and one, and two, and three, and four.

Seventh Combo: “Insane Combo”

And finally—the toughest challenge. The most difficult combo of all. After closing in, the boss will strike with a sweep. Time will slow down a bit, and you must press the parry button. After that, she’ll make a second spinning attack. As soon as she turns her back to you, press the button to block the strike. Immediately after, press parry again, as Golgra will make a sharp upward kick. Then she’ll jump, and here you need to press the parry button three times in a row, as the boss will perform a very fast aerial combo. In general, try to stick to the count: one, two, three, four, five, six.

Reward for Defeating Golgra

In reality, this is the saddest part of this guide, as you don’t get anything particularly special for winning. The fight with Golgra is more of a challenge than a way to farm good rewards. We actually recommend not wasting your time on her and completing the game without an unnecessary craving for hardcore.

Items for defeating Golgra:

  • 2,250,000 experience points. If you somehow manage to win the duel early in the main story campaign, you’ll automatically end up with such an overleveled character that the rest of the chapters will feel like an easy run with no real obstacles.
  • 3 Grand Chroma Catalysts — an item for upgrading weapons;
  • Retouch — an item for redistributing a character’s skills and stats.

Weapons for defeating Golgra:

  • Gustave/Verso will receive the sword “Sakarium” for winning. This is a regular weapon with “physical” damage and a maximum power of 2,938. Its potential is unlocked at upgrade level 10, when a perk appears that increases base damage by 50%.
  • Monoko will receive the weapon “Sidaro” for winning. It deals additional “dark” damage and gives a 30% bonus to skill damage.
  • Lune will receive the weapon “Trebyushim” for winning. It deals additional “lightning” damage and has a maximum power of 3,067. When equipped, you will gain a random mark for a ranged shot, allowing you to quickly accumulate energy for powerful abilities.
  • Ciel will receive “Hevason” for winning. This unique weapon can only be obtained by defeating Golgra. It deals “physical” damage and has a maximum power of 3,454. Already at upgrade level 4, it deals 400% damage for using 5 “predictions” and one “Moon Charge.”
  • Maelle will receive the sword “Medalum” for winning. This is a very rare weapon that can only be obtained in two ways: by winning the fourth and final duel in the Jestral village Arena or by defeating Golgra. This sword is focused on “physical” damage and has a maximum power of 2,906. It allows you to start battles with the “Virtuoso” stance already active. When upgraded to level 10, it deals double damage for igniting the enemy. At level 20, “Medalum” deals 4X fire damage.

It’s worth adding that for each victory over Golgra, you will receive the same weapon, allowing you to quickly upgrade it to the maximum level. However, we’re pretty sure that no one in their right mind would agree to another duel with the village chief without using hacks and cheats.
