In The Midnight Walk, gamers take on the role of a hero who embarks on a nighttime journey through a strange, unknown world. In this guide, we will provide a detailed walkthrough of the game, the locations of all collectibles, and help you solve puzzles and riddles.
Act 1. The tale of The Burnt One
Go to the end of the tunnel and take two eyes from the creature. A little further, you will find a similar little person who will give you two ears. Walk past the locked door and stop near several cabinets. Here you will get a tutorial: you can close your eyes using the L1 button on the gamepad to locate key items by sound. Focus on the whispering, then inspect the far right cabinet. In the bottom drawer, take the key.
If you close your eyes and keep them closed for a minute, you will unlock the Shadow Work achievement.
Return to the door and use the key to proceed. Next, you will find a giant matchbox. Take one match and light the campfire nearby. Continue along the only path, lighting candles as you go.
Just before the locked passage, there will be a small wooden bridge leading to the left. Cross it to pick up an audio recording in a small cave. To open the next passage, you need to find three candles — use the green beam as a guide.
In the tunnel, inspect a small cabinet and take the The Ragdoll doll. After exiting the cave, players will encounter the monster for the first time. Crouch and hide on the right side. Wait until the enemy turns away, then run through the passage on the left and enter the tunnel.
Here you will find a blue eye. Approach it and close your eyes to open the passage. After escaping the cave, follow along the left side. Near a candle, you will find a cabinet with the item The Daughter.
Descending even lower, light all available candles. On the left side, there will also be a door behind which the video recording Who Took The Sun Away? (1/15) is hidden. If you check the right side of the location, you will find a cabinet with the doll The Soothsayers.
In the area highlighted by light, there will be a humanoid lantern. Light it and watch a short cutscene.
Chase after the little jug, collecting collectibles along the way. On the left side, you can find the record The Soulfisher's Secret. A bit further, where you can pick up pieces of coal, take the hint page. Take the coal and approach the locked jar. Interact with the lid to knock and give the new friend the coal. He will like it, and you will need to bring him another piece — do so.
From this moment on, your friend will follow you and help solve various puzzles. For example, right after you befriend him, run after him and command him to crawl into the pipe. This way, he will open the passage for you.
Before the big wooden bridge, take the audio recording on the right. To open the next door, command your friend to stand on one button while you stand on the other. Don’t rush to leave the location, because on the right side you can find a small door behind which the record Mitt Happyplace nar varlden star i brand is hidden.
In the next area, look at the glowing eye and close your eyes using the appropriate button. At this moment, the wall will disappear, and a monster will appear behind it. Immediately run to the cabinet and press the interaction button to hide. When the enemy leaves, take the piece of paper The Dark Itself is the key, then find four candles and ask your friend to light them. As before, don’t rush to leave the area. To the right of the passage, look around and take the doll Body.
Enter the cave. First, light the candle on the ground to the right and another one on the column to the left. Then move a bit forward and look up. There will be a glowing eye—look at it and close your eyes to make the obstacle disappear. Now ask your friend to climb into the pipe and light another candle.
After getting out, examine the audio recording before the cliff. Pass by the cabinet and ask your friend to light the candle. At this moment, the monster from the right part of the location will go to the candle to extinguish it. Hide in the cabinet, use this time, and sneak to the right.
Opposite the next cabinet, open the door and take the record Koket. When you try to cross the stone bridge, it will collapse. Use a match to revive your friend and move forward.
Soon you will reach a small house. Wait for the lantern to open the door, then go inside. Here you can view all the collectibles you found during the playthrough, listen to audio recordings again, and watch video notes. When you’re ready, simply exit by interacting with the door.
After a short scene with the house, turn around and look at the glowing eye. To the left of it is a hidden collectible, the video recording Who Took The Sun Away? (2/15). After opening the passage, pick up the audio recording around the corner to the left, and at the fork, run to the left.
Once in the area with the monster, you should bait it and wait for the enemy to move away. Use this moment to climb into the cabinet and wait for the enemy to pass to the right. Now exit and run in the opposite direction.
Next, you will have a small tutorial. You can hide not only in cabinets but also behind small objects. Crouch and move close to the cover: if the screen gets darker and you hear a special sound, it means you are safe. Using the same principle, reach the next cabinet in the center of the area, wait for the monster to go right, get out, and run left.
Behind a small fence, there is another enemy. First, you need to distract him with a candle on the right side of the map. To do this, go around the fence on the right, command your friend to light the candle, and wait for the enemy to leave. Once that's done, direct the lantern onto one of the two plates, and stand on the opposite one yourself. Now just run away from the monster until you are safe.
At the main road, turn right into a dead end and take the record Grans. Command your friend to climb into the pipe and wait for the walking house to appear and open the passage.
From the road, go down to the right. Here you will find a place where you can feed your friend. This is optional, but if you try to feed him more than five pieces of coal, you will see a funny animation.
Under the giant book, find the campfire, light it with a match, and listen to the creature. A little to the right of the campfire, take the video recording Who Took The Sun Away? (3/15), then command your friend to clear the path.
When you reach the locked door, you can command your friend to heat the large cauldron to climb up and find a hint. But this is optional. Light a match, go to the edge of the abyss, and throw another burning match down (R2 button on the gamepad). This will complete the first chapter.
Act 2. The tale of The Loathsome Molgrim
Walk past the talking heads and find a small passage on the right side leading to the branch keeper. Take one of the branches and run back. Opposite the cluster of heads, there is a door with the collectible item The Headmaster.
How to solve the candle puzzle
Reach the cliff and watch a short scene. After it ends, insert the branch into the central lever. Use the left and right levers to select at least two barrels, and the central lever allows you to raise or lower the candles in the selected barrels: if a candle is already raised, it will go down, and vice versa.
At the moment, only two candles are active: the center right and the upper left. We recommend moving the upper left candle to the lower right position, placing it with an already raised candle. Now select any two barrels and raise the candles up.
After moving a bit forward, you will see a locked chest on the left and a raised iron bridge. This is the transition to the next chapter; you will only get the key after completing the second act. Follow the road up, open the cabinet on the right, and take the record Nobodyville. Take a match and light the campfire, then watch a long cutscene.
This way, you will receive a new device—a fuse weapon. However, it is only needed for solving puzzles, so you won't be able to kill monsters with it. First, load the weapon with matches and approach the still-locked passage to the next location. Above the gate, you will see two candles that need to be lit. Shoot slightly above the fuse, as the gun has a slight arc.
To open the next gate, you will also need to find and light three candles. The first is behind the matchbox. The second is to the right and above the gate. The third is to the right, but down by the water.
Move forward, stand on the button, and command your friend to light the pot opposite. This will open the gate leading to the lair of the giant bird. After doing this, the enemy will take the pot and disappear into the cave.
Follow the bird into the newly opened passage and examine the cabinet on the left. On the top pull-out shelf, pick up the map of the location, then turn right. Here, open the passage using the glowing eye.
How to escape the bird's lair
If you run out of ammo in your weapon, crawl to the end of the cave and find a matchbox. Go back to the first turn, shoot the candle, and proceed to the second fork. While the enemy is distracted, run through and you’ll end up right in the boss’s lair.
After descending, watch the cutscene. To escape the drift, you need to light three candles. But as soon as you activate any of them, the bird will start patrolling the area. It always moves in circles clockwise, so we recommend starting with the farthest candle and heading to the exit using the covers.
How to find the triangle
After getting out, watch another video clip that brings the headless character to life. There will be a puzzle with him to obtain a heart-shaped stone, but for now it’s easier to reach the first plaque in the shape of a triangle.
Move forward and turn right at the fork. All passages are now open, but you need to get to the location with three masks. To the right of it, by the way, you can find another passage. Here, the head of the character from the previous cutscene is hidden. Agree to help and take it into your inventory.
As soon as you reach the location with the masks, they will hide behind statues with glowing eyes. Close your eyes and use the sound to find them all. Once you've done this, put the masks on in the correct order (you can't make a mistake) to get the triangle-shaped stone.
Once you leave the mask location, don’t forget to find the door on the right and pick up the doll The Old Man.
How to find the moon
To find the moon-shaped stone, go to the entrance of the location. Not far from the entrance to the bird's lair, three candles with a blue glow have appeared. The first one should already be lit, since you found the triangle. Walk past the candles and turn right.
A little to the right, on an island, you can pick up the record The Spark. Go a bit further and command your friend to climb into the pipe, then light the pot. This way, you'll be able to cross to the other side and interact with the flying machine. To the left of it, don't miss the video recording Who Took The Sun Away? (4/15).
Now you need to light the candles in the correct sequence. Let’s number them from left to right, one to five:
- Second.
- Fourth.
- Fifth.
- Third.
- First.
After the cutscene, players will receive the moon-shaped stone.
How to find the heart
While trying to return, right before leaving the location, the hero will be spotted by the bird. You don’t need to run far, as there is a small grotto behind you where you can hide.
Return to the candles and light the last one, then run after the beam. This will lead you to the headless character. Interact with him and give him the head from the jar, and as a reward, you’ll receive the last heart-shaped stone.
Head to the bird’s lair and insert all three stones. After a long cutscene, you’ll be able to return to the campfire through the cabinet and get the key to the city gates.
First, light the campfire near the sleeping creature under the giant book, listen to it, and command the pot to go through the pipe, then light the candle on the other side. Restock your cannon’s ammo and shoot the second candle nearby. Before leaving this place, check the cabinet to the right of the campfire. Take the doll The Molgrim here.
The passage along the main road will be unlocked. Head in the direction where the headless bodies are coming from, collect the video recording Who Took The Sun Away? (5/15) on the right and listen to the audio note. Enter the tunnel under the bridge to complete the second story act.
