Revolution in the discovery tree: Ubisoft shared fresh details about Anno 117: Pax Romana

Ubisoft Shares New Details About Anno 117: Pax Romana, and judging by them, we are in for a noticeable evolution of the formula familiar to fans of the city-building series. The key innovation will be the discovery tree , which, together with the new knowledge system , should bring more depth and strategic planning to the gameplay. The developers assure that they have learned important lessons from Anno 1800— and are now ready for a “small revolution.”

As before, the focus is on managing the economy, meeting the needs of the population and developing the city. However, now progress in the game will be directly linked to the intellectual development of society . Knowledge, one of the eight attributes of Pax Romana, will be the main resource for discovering new technologies and opportunities.

Players will be able to accumulate knowledge by investing in education. For example, Grammaticus will help with this — educational institutions for plebeians, which provide bonuses to all nearby buildings. An interesting touch: luxury items, such as writing boards, will become important for equities and will affect the general level of education of the population. At the same time, the system will have to be balanced carefully: wine, for example, increases mood and the level of faith, but weakens the effectiveness of education.

The heart of the updated system will be the discovery tree, conditionally divided into three categories: economic, civil and military. At the start, 150 discoveries are available, each of which will require a certain amount of knowledge points. However, it will be impossible to unlock everything in one playthrough, and players will have to make conscious decisions about which development strategy to choose.

According to the developers, this structure will not overload players and will make every choice meaningful. For example, if earlier in Anno 1800 such buildings as the repair crane were simply opened during the game and could go unnoticed, now their receipt will be the result of a balanced decision. This will not only increase players' awareness of the possibilities, but also improve the development of new mechanics.

Ubisoft emphasizes that the discovery tree is not mandatory for the game, but it does open up a lot of opportunities for optimization, expanding production, and gaining an advantage over other factions. This is especially important for those who want to get the most out of each playthrough.

Anno 117: Pax Romana will be released in 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
