Mass Effect veterans ditched generative AI for Exodus

Archetype Games, a studio founded by Mass Effect veterans, announced that it is not using generative AI in the development of its sci-fi RPG Exodus. Co-founder Chad Robertson emphasized that the developers currently have no plans to use AI in any aspect of the game.

The discussion centered on Matthew McConaughey: the actor is involved in the project and is also investing in Elevenlabs, a company developing AI voice acting. However, Archetype clarified that this is in no way related to Exodus. All character lines in the game are recorded traditionally—with live actors in a studio, without voice generation.

According to Robertson, McConaughey does have a separate agreement with Elevenlabs, but it doesn't cover Exodus and comes with strict restrictions. The developers added that they are willing to reconsider their technology approach in the future if quality, deadlines, or budget dictate, but for now, the game is being developed entirely by hand.
